The old C4 Grand Picasso had the heating buttons and separate temp screen beside the little vents hard left (for the passenger) and hard right - simple to use.

The split aircon system on my previous C3 Picasso 1.6 Hdi was far superior with “hard” controls, however, I must agree with Beanee, (almost said Mr Bean), I have mine permanently set to 20 with the aircon on auto, the only time I ever adjust the heating/ventilation is to activate either from or rear defrost.
Not using your aircon will result in seal failure within the system and the subsequent need for a regas. The lubricant is suspended in the gas, so without use the seals dry out and harden.

I've checked in the manual. It doesn't actually recommend that the climate control needs to be run permanently. it actually says that the system should be run once or twice a month.

Yes that's true and mine gets used when required, too hot or humid weather, steamed up windows in rain and winter or to ensure longevity.
Note that in cold conditions the aircon will not run below 3c outside temp to prevent it freezing. Yes you can push the button but it won't tell you it's not running.
