Well I tried it again and figured out how to do it.
On the touch screen the Max button is a latch button. That is you press it to put it to max and you then have to press it again to turn it off. I thought it was a press another button to change its mode. Oh well you live and learn.

When they are actually beeping try turning the radio volume knob down. This works when sat nav voice and phone voice are speaking. Might work for you.
